The Complete Guide

Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee

The world's most sought-after coffee, grown high above the clouds in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica. Here is what makes it extraordinary.

Jamaica Blue Mountain is not simply a coffee. It is a place, a protected name, and a standard of quality that has been guarded for generations. Grown only on the misted slopes of Jamaica's Blue Mountains, it is one of the rarest and most celebrated coffees on earth.

At Shirley Estate, our family has farmed these mountains for 45 years. This guide covers what is worth knowing about Blue Mountain coffee: what it is, the grades, the flavor, and how to brew it.

What is Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee?

Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee is grown exclusively in a small, mountainous region of eastern Jamaica, across the parishes of Portland, St. Thomas, and St. Andrew. It thrives at elevations between roughly 900 and 1,700 metres, where cool air, frequent mist, and rich volcanic soil create ideal conditions for slow, even ripening.

The name is legally protected. Only coffee grown within the defined Blue Mountain zone, and certified by Jamaican authorities, may be sold as Blue Mountain. That protection is part of what makes a true single-estate offering so special.

The grades of Blue Mountain coffee

Blue Mountain coffee is separated into grades based mainly on bean size and defect count. Higher grades mean larger, more uniform, more flawless beans.

Grade 1 (No. 1)The highest export grade. The largest, most uniform beans with the fewest defects.
PeaberryA rare, naturally rounded single bean prized for its concentrated sweetness.
Grade 2 (No. 2)Slightly smaller screen size than Grade 1, still an exceptional cup.
SelectA blend of screen sizes from the same estates, excellent value and character.

Shirley Estate specialises in 100% Jamaica Blue Mountain, Grade 1, the island's highest export grade, and also offers Peaberry, Grade 2, and Select to our wholesale partners.

What does Blue Mountain coffee taste like?

The signature of a great Blue Mountain is balance. Rather than shouting, it whispers. Expect a silky, full body, a mild and pleasant acidity, and very little bitterness. Sweet notes often carry hints of nuts, chocolate, and gentle stone fruit, finishing clean and long. It is a coffee defined as much by what it lacks, no harshness, no rough edges, as by what it offers.

How to brew Blue Mountain coffee

Because the flavor is so refined, the goal is simply to let the coffee speak. A few principles help:

Shirley Estate specialises in Grade 1, the island's highest export grade, grown by our own family in the Blue Mountains and roasted to order for delivery across the United States.
